I want you to think of your friends, family, work colleagues, and random people you see, now ask yourself how many of them are still in the 9 to 5 grind, living paycheck to paycheck? And how many of them know financial education?
You’re probably saying that a lot of people don’t know what the rich know, which is very true I also know that you’re quite proud of yourself for discovering the secrets to wealth.
I can relate to you, I know how it feels to sometimes be in front of others and think to yourself I earn and know way more than you!
Some of you would never insult others to their face, or in your head but here’s where we all fall.
I was researching more about taxes which I know quite a lot about, and while I was browsing on other blogs and YouTube videos, I started to get bored, not because their info was bad but it was because of me.
After a while, I would shout out these words that I want you to avoid…
I KNOW THAT!
At first, I didn’t think much of it, but it started to get worse, I would catch myself rolling my eyes and saying more and more “Yeah yeah I know this already”.
But what was the tipping point was when I completely ignored the messages, I shut off my computer and told myself that there is nothing new, which was a huge mistake.
Especially when the day of Monday, 15 April appeared, I remember it very well, I was with my tax planner and we were discussing ways that we can reduce my tax return.
So, I did my usual spit out all these tactics and methods that we could use and normally I would listen to my tax planner but this time I was extremely rude and kept interrupting him.
But, what he did was very shocking, he went to my tap and poured some water, but when he got to the top he didn’t stop, he just kept on letting the water overflow after a while I shouted: “Hey what are you doing can’t you see it’s overflowing”?
My tax planner replied, “Since you know everything there is no space for you to learn anything from me.”
I was really taken back by what he said, since I realized he was completely right we were 40 minutes into my meeting and my tax planner hadn’t even got the chance to say a word!
I felt guilty for what I have done and let him talk for the rest of the hour and in the end, I was even more guilty.
Since my tax planner knew methods that I didn’t even know we could use, this got me by surprise, so I asked my tax planner “I thought I knew all of this, where did you find this kind of information?”
He replied with “Because I still don’t know everything, so I stay open to what others have to say.”
The conversation with my tax planner really opened my eyes to using my ears instead of my mouth, the great thing is that it made me a better business owner.
I found out there is a quote for what my tax planner said, for all you Bruce Lee fans out there here it is.
What this means is that you need to always be open, and forget what you know, so you have room to continue to stay a student and learn from others.
But Adventago when do I know something?
The way to truly know is by asking yourself this 1 question honestly.
DO YOU LIVE IT?
What I mean by this is do you truly eat what you do for breakfast? Are you deep in the trenches working on whatever it is you know? If the answer is yes, only then can you truly say I know that.
Just to let you know, I’m not talking about simply reading a book, watching a video, going to a meeting, or even just watching someone do it, I mean are you down and dirty doing the work day in and day out?
For example, what if you were going for brain surgery and the surgeon said, “I’ve watched a lot of videos, read a couple of books, and played the board game Operation, I know what I’m doing.”
Would you trust him?
I don’t know about you, but I would not be going to him, so why would you do the same for what you’re doing?
Is there a better option for what I should say?
Yes, there is, and at first, it’s going to take time to get used to the mindset change, but eventually, it will become second nature to you.
Say out loud “I don’t know that, I use that” again “I don’t know that, I use that” one last time “I don’t know that, I use that!!”
Why say this?
The reason why is that it tricks your brain into acknowledging the information you have received, but, continuing to take more in since it hasn’t been told to stop, unlike saying I know that which tells your brain to stop processing.
IN SUMMARY.
I know as successful entrepreneurs or someone who knows more than others, it can be a little difficult to hold down the ego and unplug our ears to others.
But, if we want to continue being successful we have to keep our ears peeled for new strategies.
So, remember this…
