I want you to imagine the last stressful task you did, and I want you to think back to how it made you feel, constantly trying and failing on solutions to complete that task.
If you’re thinking of a task that you’re currently struggling with then I can guess you’re still stressed out and are looking for a simple solution.
But if you’re thinking of a problem you have already solved then you’re probably thinking to yourself “If only I did …. then I would have been done a lot easier and quicker”.
We all suffer from this, from time to time, we think that the problem can be resolved just by running through the wall, when really it could have been solved by thinking of a different strategy.
I know there are a lot of people who boast to everyone about how long and hard they work, but, remember, this isn’t something they should be proud of, it only shows that they’re tired and need to change their tactics.
I want you to imagine you had two people who you were going to hire for a job of cutting trees, person 1 is ripped just like Dwayne Johnson.
And person 2 looks like this:
At first, you think it’s a no-brainer I’ll go with person 1!
But person 2 begs you to give him a chance and says he can prove to you that he’s fit for the job, you try not to embarrass him in front of person 1 so you give them both a competition of whoever can chop down 6 trees the quickest.
At first, you see person 1 smashing the tree with all his might which looked really cool, only to realize that person 2 had already gotten halfway through the tree, you looked shocked for a moment realizing that person 2 is ACTUALLY IN THE LEAD!
After a while, you stop the competition and count who has cut the most and to your surprise person, 2 has cut twice as much as person 1! You were seriously confused, was he like one of those characters in anime that look really weak, but are actually super strong?
You went up to person 2 and said he’s got the job, however person 1 got angry and said: “That’s not fair, I tried way harder than person 2 with my blunt axe!”
But person 2 says “You don’t get extra points for working hard, you get rewarded for providing results.
If you sharpened your axe you would have done better but you wanted to show off how strong you were, unlike me who just sharpened my axe and beat you”.
What this little story is trying to say is that in the world of business no one gets extra points for working hard.
People only care about results, so as an entrepreneur you must try and find ways to do difficult tasks simply.
How do I solve this?
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all, but there is a simple question you can ask yourself before you start any task. “What is the easiest way to do this with the best results?”
This one question will make you stop and think of what you would do if you had limited time but needed results fast, for example, if you were in a life and death situation and this task had to be completed.
This would make you prioritize what is important, and what else can be left behind, there is a name to this method, and it’s called the80/20 principle by Richard Koch.
In summary, this book talks about how only 20% of what you do gives you 80% of the results, so what you want to do is mentally judge if this part of your task is going to aim towards your results.
