One of the greatest challenges a lot of freelancer’s face, is how do you get clients, especially if you’re new and in a saturated market.
It can seem very difficult since you don’t have a track record, you don’t have a lot of experience, or maybe you’re new to this whole industry, what can you do?
Well, in today’s blog I’m going to go over some powerful tips that you can implement today, on how freelancers can stand out from their competitors and get their first (Or more clients).
1. Start for free
Are you crazy there’s no way I’m going to work all those hard hours, if not days for nothing?!
I understand your concern but hear me out, it won’t be forever, it’s only to get your foot in the door, there’re going to be times where you need to sacrifice getting your payment until your name is a little more known.
Also, it would catch the eye of a lot of clients, and once you amaze them with your skills, they’re more likely to give you a referral.
So, my activity for you is to go out and there, see where people need your help, for example, maybe someone’s website is slow, contact the owner and say.
“Hey, I see your website is slow, do you mind if I help you for free?” And they will probably say yes, then keep on doing this until you have built a few clients, then you can charge.
Here is a video, from one of Dan Lok’s students, that discusses the Top Trick To Getting New Clients As A Freelancer
2. Stay productive
Type in the comments “Me” if you get scared or a little hesitant to tell your clients that his or her suggestions won’t work, or look ugly?
I know being a good freelancer and following what the client wants is very important, but an outstanding freelancer helps educate their client and gives suggestions that can help improve the client’s results, so next time you feel like something could be better let the client know.
3. Overemphasize the time
I had this happen to me when I hired my freelancer to do my website, he said it will be done in 5 days which I thought was ok since I wasn’t in a hurry and I gave him a lot to do.
But I almost dropped my phone when I got a notification from him saying that he was finished in 2 DAYS!
I gave him a tip immediately, but quickly after I thought to myself “That sneaky guy 😊” He knew it wouldn’t take so long, in fact, I wasn’t mad at him, I thought it was a great idea.
You can try this method too, and amaze your clients by over-delivering and finishing the project faster than expected, believe me, that client will definitely have you in their good books.
4. Be honest with your clients
There is nothing to be ashamed about, if you had a little break, or something else came up and you had to delay the project, or maybe the client was suggesting crazy ideas that wouldn’t work.
I know it can be scary to call your client out, but if something is not right then let them know, they will appreciate it more, than going through with the idea just to realize it sucks.
5.Build your portfolio
This is the place to get started, you can host your skills on places like Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal, Guru Craigslist, and Freelancer.
There are so many websites that you can make your own profile and get started, don’t worry if you think you aren’t good enough.
Remember your first client is probably going to be your worst, it’s a way of getting your feet wet, the more you go at it the better you will become.
However
There are two problems with staying on these types of platforms, and that is you’re going to be seen as a tool.
The people who are going to hire you are just searching for price, reviews, and other things, they don’t see the true value that you’re bringing to the table.
This can be very difficult for you since you have no power on these types of platforms.
In addition, you’re going to be competing in a huge sea of other freelancers, this is going to be near impossible to stand out and make a high income if you’re only getting a few gigs here and there, so what do you do?
6.Learn from successful people in your industry
If you can find a successful mentor, that can teach you the tips and tricks to becoming successful in your industry instead of getting harsh feedback from your clients, then you can be corrected in an easier environment.
Another great advantage is that your mentor may give you actual clients work to do, this can get you in the trenches of what it would feel like to work for a successful company.
You will also get the huge benefit of having your mentor endorse you, this can help you get recognized a lot more in whatever industry you’re working in.
IN SUMMARY
Don’t do what most people do, try to get something for nothing, as much as you want money don’t instantly ask for it.
Add value first, then you can ask for something in return, use this method for people who have influence in your industry, so you can get your name out there.
I know what you’re thinking…
But Adventago won’t some people take advantage of me?
Yes, they will, but it’s ok, because you’re starting off with nothing, since no one is paying you, but if you can get one or two clients that think you’re good, they may give you a shout out, you may gain experience, or they may even pay you, and that’s how you get the ball rolling as a freelancer.
Now there is still so much you need to master to be able to kill it in freelancing, obviously, you can no longer just walk into buildings or use yellow pages and pitch your services.
So, how do you succeed in freelancing when influencers are making themselves harder and harder to get to?
I have a few resources that you can use, that go into a lot more info on how you can get recognized in freelancing, and how you can become the “Go to guy” when it comes to whatever industry you’re freelancing in.
Imagine, instead of you chasing clients, clients were chasing you!
There are a tonne of paths you can take in freelancing, but which one is going to give you the best results?
If you want to take the right path, earn a serious income, and get your name out there, then you need to use this proven A to Z road map that most people don’t understand or even know.
I would be typing for too long if I were to explain it here for you, but if you do want a more detailed approach on how you can become a richer and more recognized freelancer then…
If you liked this blog, could you please do me a tiny favor and share it with other freelancers, so they can grow and become successful, just like you! 🙂
