What would you do if a random person wanted to sell you this painting, would you pay and take it?

How about if the painting looked like this?

If I saw someone put this in a garage sale for $5, I still wouldn’t buy it, but what if my mindset was different?

Instead of me thinking about myself, and how I would like the painting, what if I thought about another person’s mindset?

Annoyingly you take out your wallet and buy the painting for $5, shove it into your car, and go back home.

You’re now in the thought of where you should put this ugly painting, after a long think you don’t care anymore, and you just slap it on your wall.

Every time you walk by it you flinch at how hideous it looks, you then come to the decision that you should throw it away.

However, out of the blue, you get a phone call from your friend who loves art and wants to come over to your house to hang out.

When he comes over to your house he almost drops from the sight of your painting, “Where on earth did you get that!” Your friend shouts.

You’re rolling your eyes explaining how you’re aware of how ugly it is, and you’re going to get rid of it immediately, but your friend grabs you by the collar and starts shaking you, “Are you crazy that’s the woman III !!!”

You reply with “Yeah I know it’s a woman, I also know it’s a useless, and ugly painting that needs to leave my house”, Your friend shouts at you That so-called “Worthless painting” is worth $137.5 MILLION

You almost collapse at the price tag, at first you think it’s a lie, but your friend drags you to one of those really expensive auctions where everyone looks like this:

2 hours go by and you’re super bored of all the silly objects people are selling, you were about to get up and leave, but something shocking happened.

They took out your painting, and the room instantly fell silent, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop, suddenly everyone’s eyes widen.

Someone shouted at the top of her lungs, “IS THAT THE REAL WOMAN III BY WILLEM?! Where on earth did you get such a painting, I’ll pay $3 million for it” You almost had a heart attack from the price she was willing to pay.

Someone else in the crowd shouts out “Nonsense up that’s chicken pees I’ll pay $10 million!” Now you’re on the floor in disbelief.

This went on for ages until the price was at $134 million you were dumbfounded how anyone would pay for such an ugly painting.

However, everyone could hear the shouting of the auctioneer saying” And sold to the lady in…… WAIT!!

Everyone turns around and gazes at this man as he says, “I’ll buy your painting for $137.5 million!” No one else could top that number, then you heard the slam of the gavel, and the auctioneer says, “And sold to the man in the blue shirt and the grey jacket!”

You ran up to this man and asked “What’s your name” he said my name is Steve Cohen and I love this painting.

You muster up the courage to say, “But it’s not even that nice, it looks like something a two-year-old would make, why on earth would you buy it for so much money?” Stephen replied

“You shouldn’t look at things as the consumer, you should look at things as the investor.”

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Firstly, this was a real story, (except for the garage sale, and your friend), in summary, what this message is trying to say is that you shouldn’t look at everything in a way that will please you.

There are key times when you should think if you can make something big, after all as entrepreneurs and investors it’s in our DNA, we are constantly looking for new and great ideas to dive into.

The same goes with the painting you may not see an opportunity for yourself to enjoy the painting but, if you didn’t have your friend who thought that there was an opportunity for someone else then you would have lost a fortune.

DOES THIS MEAN CAN I BUY ANYTHING I WANT, AND HOPE IT WILL MAKE ME SUCCESSFUL?

Of course not, that would be silly, I don’t want you to end up like the dabblers out there who just try every new and hot trend in hopes of getting rich super-fast.

Those types of people have taken this advice to the extreme, all I’m saying is that you should sometimes take opportunities even if they don’t show a clear and instant benefit.

IN CLOSING

All I’m saying is if you want your money to work for you then you should try and take little steps of risk, to see if something that may not show results instantly can grow into a huge win for you.

In addition, don’t always look at things in a way that you can benefit from the product itself, you may get a better outcome finding others who are interested in what you may not see value in.

Just remember these two bits of advice…

“Think how something can work for you, for example, if someone sells you painting and you don’t like the look of it, don’t just say no, say yes then sell it to someone who does like the painting, you never know what might happen next”.
