Thanks to you The Buddha and the Badass just hit the New York Times, thank you so much for supporting the book and I hope you’re getting incredible amounts of ideas from this book.

Now, what I want to talk about today is a really interesting idea, this idea is actually a lesson from 2 refugees who were born 700 years apart, now why talk about refugees?

Well, the past Saturday, June 20th was world refugee day, and Mindvalley is a big advocate of refugee rights.

But I want to share with you a powerful piece of wisdom from 2 refugees who were born 700 years apart.

One in the Middle East, and one in Africa, the first refugee that we’re going to talk about is called the Rumi.

Rumi

Vishen Lakhiani loves the Rumi’s poetry, and so Vishen Lakhiani started his book chapter 1 with a poem by him that transformed Vishen’s life.

But, the thing is, the first time Vishen Lakhiani heard this poem he added it just because it sounded cool.

But, Vishen Lakhiani had no idea just how deep this was, so Vishen Lakhiani reads it out to you, and as he reads it out, he wants you to reflect on it.

The Rumi said this…

“When I run after what I think I want my days are a furnace of distress and anxiety, if I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without any pain, from this, I understand that what I want also wants me, and is looking for me and attracting me, there’s a great secret in this for all who can grasp it”.

– Rumi

Rumi quote

It was Professor Srikumar Rao the great MBA lecturer, who introduced Vishen Lakhiani to that poem during a particular time in Vishen’s life, maybe 7 or 8 years ago when Vishen Lakhiani was going through extreme difficulty.

The Quest for Personal Mastery by Srikumar Rao review: Is it worth ...

Now, Vishen Lakhiani didn’t understand what that poem truly meant until a second refugee popped into Vishen’s life.

He goes by the name Drima Starlight.

Mindvalley mentor Drima Starlight

He has sought asylum in Canada, so that’s where he lives right now in Toronto, what Vishen Lakhiani (And even I) have learned from Drima is that there are 2 types of wantings within us.

The first wanting is the desires that come from growing up in this world, but the second wanting is different, it is a seed that has been planted in you, Vishen Lakhiani calls this.

“The seed of your soul.”

And when you discover what that seed is, you activate the magic that Rumi was talking about, now Vishen Lakhiani didn’t really understand Rumi’s poem, Vishen Lakhiani didn’t get what he meant by…

“If I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without any pain, from this, I understand that what I want also wants me and, is looking for me, and attracting me.”

There are 2 different types of want’s here, there is wanting from the culture scape and wanting that is planted in you as a seed from your soul.

When you tap into that seed from your soul, what happens is your days no longer become a furnace of distress and anxiety.

And what you need flows to you without any pain, so Vishen Lakhiani did this exercise with Drima Starlight in 2016 and Vishen Lakhiani says this exercise “Changed his life”.

This was the exercise that Drima took Vishen through.

Vishen piece of paper

When Vishen Lakhiani was doing this exercise, he didn’t understand how important it was going to be, in fact, Vishen didn’t even give him a fresh sheet of paper, Vishen just grabbed a used piece of paper and flipped it around.

And so, this exercise changed Vishen’s life and Mindvalley, because it made Vishen Lakhiani understand why he was born.

Now the interesting thing is when you talk about Rumi and finding your true wants it sounds rather mystical, metaphysical, or philosophical.

But how do you bring that to life? The exercise that Drima showed Vishen Lakhiani brought that to life, it’s a reflection exercise that helps you understand why you’re who you are.

And then how to take that and fuse it into everything you do, this could be your creation, your book, your business, your company, or your personal brand, and when you do that magic happens.

Vishen Lakhiani would like to take you through the same exercise, and you’re going to end up with a sheet of paper like this, and this piece of paper is going to transform everything about your life.
